    What is the Shahada?

    The Shahada is the announcement of Muslims’ belief in the oneness of “God” and the acceptance of Muhammad as the Prophet of God. Shahada in Islam are the testimony that

    “لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ” والشهادة بأن “مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ”

    There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God.

    • As for the first word: “testimony that there is no god but God,” :

    A person confesses with his tongue and heart that there is no deity but God, the Mighty and Sublime, because God is in the sense of what he is filled with, and deification is worship. The meaning is that there is no true divine being but God alone.

    • As for the meaning of shahada in Islam: “Muhammad is the Messenger of God” :

    It is admit by the tongue and belief in the heart that Muhammad is the Messenger of God, and this testimony requires that you believe the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, what he has told, and that you obey his directions in everything, and that you avoid what he forbade.

    Origin of meaning of shahada in Islam

    The two shahada were mentioned in the Qur’an, but they were not mentioned side by side, as we mentioned the exact form of them. But it was point out in the hadiths. And from the Qur’an:

     شَهِدَ اللّهُ أَنَّهُ لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ وَالْمَلاَئِكَةُ وَأُوْلُواْ الْعِلْمِ قَآئِمَاً بِالْقِسْطِ لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ

    There is no god but He: That is the witness of Allah, His angels, and those endued with knowledge, standing firm on justice. There is no god but “He”, the Glorious in Power, the Wise.

    What does Shahadah literally mean?

    Shahada is from the verb “to witness”, which the meaning of shahada in Islam is to know and believe in God without the minor doubt.

    One truthful recitation of the Shahada in Arabic is all it takes for an individual to become a Muslim. This pronouncement, or statement of faith, is literally called the “Word.” The recitation of the Shahada is the most essential of the five pillars of Islam for Muslims. Non-Muslims desiring to convert to Islam do so by publicly narrating this statement of belief.

    • Knowing the meaning of shahada in islam very well, that is, that no one is worshiped but God, and the sincerity of worship is for God.
    • You must be honest with yourself, you must not only say it with your tongue, but also be true in your heart. If you say it while you are not truthful in your statement, it is considered false.
    • Loving, and you show your love to God and that you wish to say the shahada for the sake of pleasing God and no one else.

    What is the purpose of Shahada?

    All Islamic scholars say that shahada is one of the highest pillars of Islam and one of the most important of them. Why?

    Because it is the first step of repentance and getting nearby to God, so whoever dies on shahada will benefit from it by the mercy of God.

    Without Shahada, no work is valid for a Muslim, and neither prayer nor fasting is recognized, and no work is accepted without the basis of Islam.

    Finally, there is no structure without a basis and Shahada is the foundation upon which all the actions of a Muslim are built.

    What does the Quran say about Shahada?

    As we mentioned, the formula was not repeated as complete as Muslims know it in the Qur’an, but there are evidences in the Qur’an for it:

    فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مُتَقَلَّبَكُمْ وَمَثْوَاكُمْ

    Know, therefore, that there is no god but Allah, and ask forgiveness for thy fault and for the men and women who believe: for Allah knows how ye move about and how ye dwell in your homes.

    Can you take shahada alone?

    Saying Shahada can be alone; the relationship with God is a relationship that does not belong to anyone but you. You can replay it publicly later if you feel ready to take it out to the public.

    Some flags of Islamic countries use flags engraved, either with the Shahada, as in the flags of Saudi Arabia, the practice of engraving the Shahada on flags may go back to the eighteenth century, Abdulaziz Al Saud, the leader of the House of Saud and the coming founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, added a sword to this flag.

    The Taliban used a white flag in print on Shahada in black as the flag of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

    Most countries in the Arab area define Islam as the state religion. Utmost of these countries have nationwide flags that include Islamic symbolism.

    Meaning of shahada In Sufism

    In Sufism, there is a celebration where the Muslim says the Shahada a thousand times in a repeated way and these festivals creates a kind of spiritual communication with God from their point of view. Where the word “Allah” is countless repeated many times. So Sufis are very concerned about ceremonies.
