Hijab in Islam. Praise be to God, and may blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of God, the word hijab in Islam is used in the current era to refer to the head covering, but the original meaning of the hijab is that it covers the whole body. Islam honors and protects women from being a mere pleasure for men only. Among this preservation and chastity with which god protects women in Islam from any harm that harms them is hijab, as almighty said,
( ياأيها النبي قل لأزواجك وبناتك ونساء المؤمنين يدنين عليهن من جلابيبهن ذلك أدنى أن يعرفن فلا يؤذين وكان الله غفورا رحيما )
Allah said(Oh Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the women of the believers that they should draw down their outer garments over them, and result for that they will be recognized as righteous and not be harassed. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful)

What is the Hijab meaning?
In the current era, the term Hijab (veil) is used to denote the head covering only, while in conventional or Islamic jurisprudence it means the clothing that covers the whole body, The veil(Hijab) of the Muslim woman is meant by the dress that conceals her from foreigners consists of the (jilbab the garment that covers the body+ the head covering).
What is the purpose of a Hijab?
The purpose of it is chastity and the preservation of the Muslim woman, Islam honor women and did not make them a cheap commodity for everyone, And as the Noble Qur’an indicated (that is better for them to be known and not to be harmed) the verse refers to wearing the Hijab(veil) that they are in this way and with this appearance, it seems to the others that they are among the virtuous and righteous.

Is the Hijab compulsory in Islam?
Islam has imposed the veil on women explicitly in more than one place in the Prophet’s Sunnah and the Noble Quran.
Where God Almighty said in Surah An-Nur, speaking to women,
(وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا ۖ وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُيُوبِهِنَّ)
(And they should not display their adornment except what normally appears and let them strike their veils over their chests).

How can wearing a hijab be empowering?
Wearing the correct hijab must include the following conditions:
- That it accommodates the entire body of a woman, including her face and hands, as most Muslim scholars believe.
- It should be made of thick fabric and free of adornment.
- It should not describe a woman’s body or any part of it. The veil on the woman’s body should not be tight or separated.
- It does not aim to be famous among the general public or attractive for men.

Does Hijab restrict women’s freedom?
Hijab does not restrict a woman’s freedom. Rather, the hijab has made her more freedom to interact with people and society, but some understand the hijab as a restriction of freedom,
and that is because these see that the limits of God and adherence to the law restrict freedom and in the fact, the wise Sharia does not restrict us with anything, We have a lesson in the mothers of the believers, as they used to go out and migrate with the companions, even if it was in jihad.
Conclusion
Islam imposed the veil on women to preserve them and not to restrict them, and Islam specified those who only have the right to look at a woman’s adornment and this is a form of honor and praise for them, Just as the veil saves her from the wrath of God and from His punishment in the Hereafter.
